The older I get, the more I want to get off work early and rush home as quickly as possibly to do absolutely nothing but be a part of my couch.

This is absolutely my experience. I work at a large company. When I was hired, my manager actually helped me understand this. He explained it this way:

"How much is the difference between your target bonus and maximum bonus?"

"About 5-10% of my salary..."

"Right. And in a regular week, how many hours do you have to put in to earn 5-10% of your salary?"

"Well in a 40 hr work week, I guess that would be 2-4 hours."

"Correct. Now, almost everybody gets at least their target bonus. You only don't get it if you do something really bad. But very few people get their max bonus. Maybe 1-2 people per department. How many extra hours do you think you'd have to put in to be recognized as one of the top 1-2 people in your department?"

"Umm...a lot?"

"Yeah. A lot. You can bet a lot more than 2-4 hours per week of discretionary effort. So...is it worth it to you to invest those hours at the possibility of max bonus, keeping in mind it's not even guaranteed that your effort will pay off?"
