Ok to comment specifically on my own experience then: my family on my mother’s side is Polish. My grandmother was not taught to speak Polish however, only English, because her parents wanted to assimilate completely into American culture. Everything they brought as far as tradition was basically abandoned so that they would not stand out as immigrants. I would have preferred to retain the special traditions, recipes, etc. they had instead of this vanilla American culture we have. It’s boring and not terribly unique. Again, this is just my personal preference.

I didn’t/don’t participate in most of the items you listed. I guess I never considered them part of America’s culture.
