On new companies 'just copying what's available from DIY builds'

This post is less about Fabian and more about that general comment. I really just want to say "of course it is a copy" it only makes sense it is a copy, and doing something totally off the wall/unique is probably more bad product development than anything.

This is why you still hear little from LeifBoard, or Linky IMO. They went with the "design like crazy and come up with something super unique" without getting it in people's hands. Now they are stuck behind their features, and making change is going to be costly and difficult. It certainly can work, but usually you'd be talking to a lot of industry leaders and experts (and spending a lot of money to do so). I think you see this with Boosted and who they brought in to collaborate early on.

Not that there's anything 'wrong' with that, I think Leif and Linky are both really cool and interesting myself, and I'd love to see them really take off. It's just a costly and risky way of developing, and that's not what most businesses should ever go after. In less than a year it's pretty clear Meepo was able to maneuver faster, get new improvements out, and build up a great fanbase in comparison to either of them.
