On Women's Day, read the suicide note of a man

Within a week of marriage, she started pestering my family by asking divorce for no reason. We ignored. She never allowed me to come close to her for 2-3 months after the marriage. My father advised that with time everything will be fine

I gotta be honest. The involvement of parents, brothers, and family members in "managing" this marriage seems to have helped spiral this failed marriage into a legal nightmare and a suicide. I notice that any action that the husband took, he took as "we" and by "we" he meant himself and his parents. He even commits suicide to protect his parents.

At the same time, no understanding or empathy for the wife expressed at all. Okay, it is a suicide note, and by definition it comes from a person who sees no options, sees no solutions, sees only one side of the situation, but, at no point in this suicide note are we privy to any human connection between Avadhesh and Unnati.

I don't live in India, but I have to ask the question. Was Unnati marrying a husband, or was she marrying an entire family? I notice at one point she demanded that her husband leave his parents (and presumably the two of them live alone). So here is really the great moment of truth. Avadhesh has to choose, which relationship does his primary loyalty lie, to his wife, or to his parents. But the suicide note moves past that demand without another comment. It is just one more crazy comment by the crazy woman. By ignoring her, he has made his choice.

According to the note, there was a false charge leveled against the family of molestation and rape. But note the irony here. This was not the first lawsuit between them. Avadhesh states earlier in the note "On advice of lawyers, we filed a case of restitution of conjugal rights" "WE", as in him and his mother, and father and family filed a case asserting conjugal rights. How would you feel if all your in-laws weighed in on your sex life? Her accusation seems almost a Freudian reaction to the overreach of her in-laws.

Let's be careful with this one. This story is a story captured in a suicide note. So there is a whole lot we don't know. Our hearts go out to all of Avadhesh's friends and family in the face of this tragedy.

However, the note is being used as propaganda against the rights of women on Woman's day. Both the suicide note and the commentary around it decry the power women have to cause trouble. Yet, the story told by the suicide note show how routinely the wife was ignored. As much as this note is being used as an attack on the rights of women, it really shows how much more society needs to empower women particularly brides within the home.
