One of my first thoughts when people say "Humans can kill animals because we're smarter than them"

I dunno about that. I have lived on a hobby farm working with pigs. There is nothing wrong in my view about giving some creatures a good comfy life and a kind end. If we don't eat them, they don't exist.

Pigs are very interesting because they change with time and have personalities. They aren't nearly as clever as dogs, even if people try to make that a thing. For example they don't take commands, don't empathize for shit and mostly operate from instinct.

When they are piglets they are cute and silly and pretty much behave like all baby critters. Once they are big enough to fend for themselves its like Lord of the Flies - they are assholes to each other. Brutal competition.

Eventually they get older and big and comfortable. They trust you, more or less. They are gentle and patient but you can't make them do shit unless they are hungry and you are leading them with food. They don't really think past their noses. This gif is nothing more than task for food behavior.

These animals exist because we eat them. Once we stop eating them, they won't exist. They would just get eaten by predators because they aren't adapted to live wild. They are like us in that they want to be safe and warm and fed and enjoy affection. Meet those needs and they are fine. We need much more than that. We are different. Mapping our experience onto them is foolish. But we should be kind to them all the same.
