One play from another team you'll never forget?

Josh Lambert's extra-long FG to win the game in Lubbock as time expired.

The crowd was at its peak intensity to try to throw him off his game. As the ball flew through the air, you could almost see the screams and shaking of the stadium throw it off course a little bit... although maybe that was just the goalpost.

As the ball sailed through the uprights, the noise level dropped from a fever pitch to the shocked silence of disbelief. A million voices cried out in terror, and then were suddenly silenced.

It was unlike anything I have ever witnessed before in real life. The student section, who usually loves to taunt players as they leave the field - even when Tech loses - didn't throw anything back as the Mountaineers went back to their locker room and trash-talked the fans along the way.

I don't think 82-27 was more demoralizing to the fans simply because you saw it unfold over the course of the game. Every single Tech fan in the Jones knew Lambert would miss the 55-yard kick and the game would go to overtime. When the field goal was made, it was like being shot in the gut.

The context is important - Tech was destroyed by Kansas State (which is nothing new to Tech fans at this point) but put up a good performance against Oklahoma State and even looked good against Arkansas early. They beat the two other OOCs, had beaten WVU twice in a row, and every Tech fan knew the Red Raiders would pull it out at home after a tough three-game slate.

And then, the kick. After that, you knew as a Tech fan this season would be different in a bad way. You just lost to a team you thought you would own in this conference, TCU was a top 10 team, Kansas had just put up a great showing against Oklahoma State... the fear really began to seep in.
