One Random Plate

One random plate. This is my proposal for Illinois. There aren’t many things I agree with Governor Rauner on, but on this latest bill he signed into law, I think he’s right. Over the years, Illinois has possibly become one of the worst states in the US for license plates (among other things). There are just way too many plate types and customization options. The thing is, a license plate is for one thing and one thing only-to identify your vehicle. The burden on law enforcement in Illinois to recognize every plate is high and for out of state cops, it’s downright ridiculous.

This is my proposal for what an Illinois plate should look like. I don’t understand why we are the only state I know of that has separate plates for cars and trucks. I REALLY don’t understand why Illinois of all places has a 9/11 plate. There is a place and a time to remember national tragedies, but I don’t think a car’s license plate is one of them. If you like my proposal, please join me in sending this to Gov. Rauner and Sec. of State White. I believe this is a simple and elegant plate that represents our state well and is easy to read. What do you think?

Feel free to offer criticism or submit your own proposals. I’m curious to see what people think.

Here are the details in case anyone is interested: The plate number is in the DIN font, formerly the default plate font in Europe. The number is black on white, making it high contrast and hopefully easy to see from a distance.

The state name is in Helvetica Bold Oblique and in U of I orange (Pantone 158) The state motto is also in Helvetica Bold Oblique and in U of I blue (Pantone 281)

The simplified state seal from our flag is in the background at a 75% opacity.
