One Third the Season Gone

Definitely happy with the point total, and to be tied for first, but I'm quite worried about the offense. Yes, United have faced injuries, but none to an attacking player (though Arriola and Rodriguez did have to play out of position). I'm uncomfortable with the notion that an injury to their starting left back can completely dismantle the attack because it's unlikely United will take a fully healthy lineup to the playoffs. They need to be able to work around a single injury. Plus, even switching back to the original formation yesterday, goal threats were still lacking outside of set pieces.

Trying to diagnose the issues, I'm noticing a few things. First, there's a definite lack of an Arriola to Rooney combination. Arriola is a player who likes to surge down the wings then play in crosses. I'm not sure that play has produced a goal this season because Rooney is quite useless in the air at this point in his career; he needs the ball on his feet. Second, Rodriguez has yet to pose much of a threat. I'm still waiting for that to change because he looks very sharp on the ball, but he's not in sync with Acosta. Notice how active Segura was upon entering yesterday. He's not a better player than Rodriguez, but his positioning is much sharper. Third, the attack seems overall too deliberate. Outside of runs from Arriola and Jara, movement off the ball is scarce. I was never too high on Asad last year, but I think his ability to pass and move is being missed. Also, United's CDMs need to get Acosta the ball in more dangerous positions. It's inefficient to have Acosta taking the ball right off his teammates' feet: it slows down the attack, forces Acosta too deep, and effectively removes the player who initially had the ball.
