One Week Until Dragon Quest of the Stars Releases!

Man, this "love letter to the fans" stuff has become a meme on this subreddit.

Not to say that fans don't get love, for example Dragon Quest XI is a love letter to the fans, because it's a 110 hour game that knows it would've sold the same amount of copies even if it was a 50 hour game. It's a generous game that maintains the spirit of DQ, and is loaded with Dragon Quest. It has three times more content than your average AAA game, and I love that, and I bought it twice to reward the developers for making it.

But that doesn't mean that everything that contains a Dragon Quest character is a love letter to the fans.

A phone gacha game is not a love letter to the fans, it's just an attempt to make money off of the lowest hanging fruit.

Dragon Quest: Your Story is not a love letter to the fans, because the fans LIKE Dragon Quest 5. They LIKE Toryiama's style. They LIKE the established voice actors for Bianca and Flora. DQ:YS is made for the broadest audience possible, using popular actors, and a popular CG-movie artstyle. It is not made as a love letter to fans.

Sorry for writing this out to you, we're all DQ fans here and we love Dragon Quest, and I respect that. But we don't need to call it a ~Love Letter to the Fans~ when a company takes a shit on us. Dragon Quest games are unique in that they actually are generally very generous, much more generous than they need to be. They contain a lot more "game" than they need to. But freemium gacha games are not generous, they are not kind to the fans, they are just an easy attempt to monetize the fanbase.
