Ontario brings in 'pay transparency' bill, employers can't ask about previous pay and can't bar employees from disclosing their pay to others

I'm from Ontario. I just got hired by a new company and managed a 25% raise with better benefits. Recruiters get a lot of flack, but when they're from a third-party company they can be your best weapon. Mine told me like it is- "I get a percentage of your salary for the first 3 years, so the more I get you, the more I get too."

I was honest with what I was making, and what I wanted to make. He did all the negotiations for me, and when the new company straight up asked him what I'm currently getting paid, he deflected and said "he is looking for a competitive salary".

It can be awkward when they put you on the spot like that, but there's some good tools out there to at least know your worth in the industry (e.g. PayScale & Glassdoor).

This bill sounds great, especially for applying to smaller companies with less public data. I've wasted so much time and stress going through the interview process, things are going great, then as soon as the salary stuff comes at the end I hit a wall. I feel like this will at least minimize that headache.

I just hope there's some rules about the range posted, so they can't say something like "$40,000 - $100,000"
