Ontario has a doctor shortage. So why isn’t the Ford government licensing more internationally trained physicians living here?

Canadian medical education is so far behind the rest of the world it's not funny. We just don't have enough medical schools and they don't have enough spots. Look at country like Australia that has ~10 million less people than Canada but has more medical schools and they have more students per class.

We don't have the capacity to train enough doctors and the government knows that. The worst part is that they do nothing to address it. They know they need to rely on a certain amount of foreign trained doctors to manage the supply, but Canada is notoriously difficult to get your foreign credentials accepted and many foreign doctors end up going to the USA instead because of the pay.

The government does nothing to try and help Canadian's become doctors either. They know there's not enough spots in Canadian medical schools and getting one of those spots is essentially a lottery, so you have all of these perfectly capable future doctors not entering the profession. Or they are forced abroad where they have to pay extremely high tuition fees and there is no guarantee they will even be allowed to practice once they get back.

Why not help these Canadians out? We could get these people to sign contracts before they leave stating they have to come back after their foreign training and work x amount of years or they suffer some penalty and in exchange Canada will fund a large portion of their schooling.

There are so many people who could be great doctors but just don't have to opportunity to do so and have no help. I should know because I was one. I went to a world class medical school in Australia for 3 years out of a 4 year MD degree. All I wanted to do was come back and be a family doctor in Ontario. But when I needed a loan to help pay for tuition, the government of Ontario kindly informed me that they don't provide assistance to out of country schools. Meanwhile, my classmates from Alberta are getting over half of there tuition covered in their provincial loan program. Ontario is so far behind, it's not even funny.
