Opening scene

I would put less work into the opening scene than into anything else in my first draft. For me, this is the place to just write and not worry about tone, mood, or any other details.

The chances of the first chapter surviving intact are negligible. Why spend hours choosing perfect words to form into perfect sentences that convey the perfect mood in a perfect scene that you will almost certainly eventually delete when you realize you started the story in the wrong place? At least for my writing style, the time for this question is when you finish the story and your question is "Now that I know how it ends, I want to start my story in a graveyard . . ."
