Opinion | I’ll say it: I do not think killer robots are a good idea

About 15 or so years ago there was an uproar about a potential new “chemical warfare” weapon that unofficially went by the name “The Gay Bomb”.

I shit you not, this was a real thing that the US military tested and considered putting into use. Basically it was a bomb/device that released some type of chemical compound that—when inhaled—would cause people to be so euphoric to the point that their sexual desires outweighed anything else, including their desire to commit acts of violence.

When we’re talking about terrorist militias who intend to mass murder people, this in my opinion seemed completely viable and legit, regardless of how funny it came off as. But there was extreme backlash against this proposed “weapon” because its name “Gay Bomb” was seen as a homophonic slur and I think that was one of the main reasons why the US military scrapped it.

Fast forward to present day and now we are proposing for robots with AI and all sorts of algorithms based on malicious intent to carry out acts of extreme violence as a viable method of protection/defense while something 15 years ago that did not involve gruesome killing was scrapped because the name of it maybe offended the feelings of some people.
