Opinion: No, immigration is not some magic pill for saving the economy

If there is one constant in these threads, it is people dropping an ultra basic justification for immigration existing at all , as if that is all that needs to be said.

Like yes, it's super obvious to everyone that canada needs some amount of immigration. Low birth rate, need to replace the boomers, etc. Even the most anti-immigrant fringe party still wants a few hundred thousand people a year. The discussion has never been about zero immigration, at least not as long as I have been alive.

What I haven't seen many people going into detail to explain why 400k people per year is not enough and that 500k is needed. It's literally double what it was in 2014-15, and from my memory, that was also considered a fairly high rate back then.

"We need immigration," like thanks can we talk about where they are gonna go, with our deep housing shortage and skyrocketing real estate market? How will this help canadian wages increase to match the steep inflation?
