Opinions on Yorgos Lanthimos

I saw the Favourite with my family about a month ago, and while I thought it was pretty good, they completely trashed it. More or less it came down to them expecting a conventional period biopic, the kind of movie they love. It obviously wasn't the case and it doesn't help that the comedy apparently didn't hit with them, I think they aren't very fond of satire in general. They found the way every character is ridiculized very harsh, which I disagree on since there's clearly a very human side to most of them. They didn't comment on much more (my mom disliked Stone's and Weisz' acting for some reason).

I can't tell if in general they found it boring, terrible or unnecessarily weird, or maybe just a mix of all those. All I know for certain is that I should never show them The Lobster lol

I personally was expecting a bit more but I have to re-watch it in a more relaxed environment. I think Yorgos' style fits more with something completely unnerving and disturbing like Killing of a Sacred Deer, but it's nice to see him going in new directions
