Opioid dispenser for registered addicts in Vancouver BC. Dispenses 8mg hydromorphone at a cost of 35 cents per pill. Thoughts?

I'm into the vending machine idea. Making drugs cheap and accessible, with no ambiguity regarding potency, is a great harm reduction strategy.

However I am concerned about the "registered addicts" bit. I can only hope that it operates similarly to syringe exchanges, where you have a participants code that contains no identifying information. Being able to remain anonymous and not register oneself with the state would make it more accessible. Other than providing peace of mind to a criminalized population, anonymity also means that you don't have the same barriers to access that you do with, say, food stamps.

I certainly don't want to see a continuation of some of the absurd hoops one must go through dealing with some suboxone clinics. Missing appointments can cost you your access to services. And that starts getting real absurd when you live in a more rural area, where the clinic may be a county or two over, and you may be a houseless person without a car. A friend of mine had this shit happen to them, and in order to get on at a different clinic in a different county, they had to pop positive for opiates on a piss test, so they used the day before the appointment, and told the clinic such, who then told them to come back once they were in withdrawal. My point being, regardless of the supposed reasons for this sort of policing, it just ends up restricing access to much needed services.
