Do others find it hard to finish books because some of the content can be too emotionally taxing?

I've put down one or two books for this reason... sometimes I just think it's bad writing that's trying too hard to shock you. Some novels are hard to read, but still warrant reading and make their point very well. In terms of advice, I find the idea of being triggered very defeating. Why give anything outside of you power over you like that? You'll literally never be able to avoid everything that's potentially triggering. And that's what it is, avoidance. From someone with ptsd, and having literally been admitted to a mental hospital, I get it. Things used to trigger me, too. But I didn't want to live the rest of my life not knowing when something else was going to ruin my day. I didn't want to miss things just bc I was scared. So my advice is to face, not avoid, things that make you uncomfortable. Yeah there are plenty of other books out there, but if they aren't challenging you in some way, you're missing out on a lot and that probably carries over to other parts of your life.
