i think that if /u/whatzthefrequency changed "lift up" to "help share" or something, it would be better. that said:

no one's saying these artists have to represent the queer experience; like op said, "other [songs] are songs we just enjoy by musicians who identify as LGBTQ+." But for some people it's nice to see yourself represented. some people do care if the grizzly bear dude is gay.

If you want to listen to artists who sing about the queer experience specifically, that's fine and you can seek those out.

but i mean, isn't it nice for at least some sort of guide to help? i mean, this list isn't necessarily tailored toward artists speaking specifically to the queer experience or whatnot (and even that's a bit reductive--you mention car seat headrest, whose music i know has certainly helped young queer people, even if not all of it is capital q queer), but along with the comment section it can help people find what they're looking for.

Sometimes these attempts to fight ignorance, prejudices and xenophobia almost seem as bad as the people committing the injustices, in the way they stereotype and separate and lump people into one-dimensional categories.

again, i don't think this list is intrinsically doing that. but about it being "almost as bad" as actual ignorance and hatred and violence against queer people--c'mon man.

If I were queer and in a band, I'd want my music to be valued on its own terms instead of being championed because I'm gay or whatever.

i don't think this is "championing" anyone. it's a list made to let people know that these queer artists exist. and for the part about pwr bttm speaking for queerness... i haven't listened to their music, but it seems like for a lot of people it did speak strongly to their queerness. all this list is is a resource for people to find artists that possibly can do that too, in whatever way. there's no monolithic response to art and identity. this list isn't perfect by any means, but it's something.
