Overwatch 2 Developer Blog: Explaining matchmaker goals and plans, part 2

Not using a players individual performance in a loss to consider their MMR? This sounds like the single worst thing I’ve ever heard a competitive system do. That just made me decide to never play competitive Overwatch ever again.

If your team clearly just isn’t doing well regardless of whether you personally are doing well or not, the absolute best thing for you to do is throw the game. Forget throwing, you may as well actively grief your teammates. The fact that trying your hardest and trying to win in an eventual loss will be seen as just as valuable as genuinely griefing your teammates or being AFK, it’s so awful. There’s genuinely no point in trying.
