Pandemic Shutdown Is Speeding Up The Collapse Of Coal

It's nuanced. The left has been advocating getting replacement industries into areas which are mono-economically dependent upon the coal industry. A precipitous loss of coal will leave vast swaths of Appalachia completely impoverished.

Unfortunately for these same people, the right has very effectively propagandized to them that leftist measures aimed at diversifying their economies have been the left "declaring war on coal" and attacking the very livelihood of these "hard working Americans".

"Coal keeps the light on" bumper stickers are common place in rural KY and SC, etc. "Coal works for us by putting us to work" type sentiments are sloganized and weaponized at rallies.

The right is simply pandering to the industry which knows the writing is on the wall. Coal is dying, but they are not done squeezing every last dollar out of that industry before they toss it aside. Allowing coal country to diversify its economy now will hurry along the transition away from that economy so the right does not allow economic investment into those regions and vilifies all attempts to the citizens there.

Hemp, tourism, film, etc. Many subsidies have been suggested. Mitch McConnell et al. shoot them all down with extreme prejudice.

So here we are. The bridge is out and there are no safety nets for these people. When their mono-economy collapses, the right will successfully spin to them that the left finally won the war on coal and that these people are the victims of the left's short sightedness. None (or very few of them) will be bothered to investigate the actual record to see how many attempts were made to encourage alternative industries in these regions by the left and how strictly opposed these efforts were by the right.

"Beautiful clean coal"
