Paragon, the new MOBA from Epic Games. What are your thoughts?

Hey there. I've been playing this game ever since I was invited to the Online Tests in January, and I think it's time to share my thoughts after seeing the game progress for nearly half a year.

First, Epic is a great company. They've been very open to feedback and the game's changed a lot since Online Test 1 was released. Very nice community events, and very transparent in their decisions. However, I think the latest patch has killed the game for me. Before I move on to that, let me say state the good things about the game:

  • The graphics are stunningly beautiful (running on UE4, after all). The animations are top-notch, and the sounds are quite good.

  • The heroes are all magnificent-looking.

  • The use of the Z-axis is pretty unique (even though a few other games have done it before).

Now, onto the...er...bad parts:

  • The game is ridiculously slow. Ever since the latest patch, some people have been in games lasting up to 2 hours.

  • The rewards are too RNG. Even if you're 20 levels above a newbie, you can still get the worst rewards in the game.

  • The heroes are all devoid of personality. Seriously, just compare the charismatic, lively gods from Smite to these emotionless figures. I don't even think voice-acting will solve the problem.

  • The RNG card system isn't very practical for a MOBA. The card crafting will help lower the damage, but something like this can hurt the game's future competitive scene.

Now, I'm not saying that the game's bad or anything; it can be really enjoyable and I even like it sometimes. It's just that...why do I have to play this when there are more complete MOBAs out there? Seriously, the game is on the transition from unique to typical (and the game's strongest métier will removed soon). Smite and Gigantic are both 3rd person MOBAs, but they're also unique and much more enjoyable (with no RNG bullshit). I know some people will retaliate with things like "If you don't like its slow pace, then a traditional MOBA like Paragon isn't for you." Honestly, if I want a traditional, slow-paced MOBA, I'd rather play Dota or LoL. I just think that the MOBA market is too saturated right now, and it's time for something new and unique to pop up. I'll still keep a close eye on this game until it enters Open Beta in August, but I'm honestly just pretty concerned about its future.
