PARENTS AND ADULTS ONLY RESPOND: My daughter wants to drop out of Princeton and we are in despair!

I usually don't get involved with things like this, but Barnard is literally a school from Columbia University. It's not some "obscure" or "lame" liberal arts school but rather you get a degree from a prestigious Ivy League school. Beyond that, as an Asian-American student with my whole family in STEM, my parents are still okay with me majoring in Journalism or Communications, even if it is unconventional. If Princeton doesn't have the right program, the school name won't take your daughter as far as you think. For example, I could go to Princeton even though they don't have a Journalism program, or I could go to a journalism school at a university, and that would have more weight in the professional world. There are plenty of options for a gender studies major, including going to law school or going into business, advocacy, or even journalism. I truly hope that as upset you may be, you find it in your heart to be happy for your child and let her do what she would like to do. If her being a gender studies major truly does not let you sleep at night, compromise and tell her that she should consider double majoring and go from there. Right now, it doesn't sound like you're listening to your daughter at all and instead blaming her for her feelings.
