Parents of reddit: How do you feel when your kid brings back a girlfriend/boyfriend? How do you decide whether you like them or not?

This will probably get buried but here's how it went down with my daughter's first bf. I met him supposedly before they started dating and he seemed alright but I could kinda tell there was something goin on between them. I later found out my ex was letting him sleepover at their place so naturally as a father of a 14 yr old I flipped the fuck out. I couldn't believe she was letting them have sleepovers at that age. This kinda drove a wedge between me and my daughter. She quit coming on my weeks, wouldn't even come on the weekends. Then I found out he was smoking cigarettes, weed and getting drunk. I don't really care that he's doing it at that age, I started when I was 15 too. But I didn't like that someone into all that was dating my daughter soooo I kinda flipped out again. My daughter is an honor student and she was dating this degenerate that's barely passing school. Well I didn't hold that back from her, I told her exactly that.

So that didn't go over very well as expected. Fast forward a few months and they broke up because he was talking to other girls and basically had a side chick. Fuck that kid...I knew some shit like this was gonna happen and now it did but of course I'm still the bad guy for telling her something like that would happen.

She brought around a couple other guys after that and I was a little nicer to them because all I really wanted was to reconnect with my daughter. I wanted her back in my life. I didn't approve of her dating choices, one of them was the brother of the first bf so it just seemed really weird. She seemed like her mother and just wanting attention from a guy type thing.

Anyways, it didn't work out with any of the other guys, and she's now back to dating the first guy. I've been nice to him now though because, again, I just want my daughter in my life. He comes to family dinners at my parents and stuff now, we even went camping for a week this passed summer. He treats her nice and seems to have been doing better in school and makes her happy and that's all that really matters to me, is that she's happy. I actually don't mind the kid now, he comes from a broken family and kinda reminds me of myself at that age.
