Paris police station attacker lived in German refugee shelter: police

I replied to a comment not too long ago (so this might seem out of context), but I think people are looking at this issue with a very reactionary view (as in, they're literally reacting to this in the most conservative way possible).

Here's what I wrote, trying to explain the issue:

Not going to deny that a lot of people believe this, but to argue your first point, let's assume that they do grow up in a culture that teaches them that about Western Women.

A human being, regardless of where they lived, coming to a western country surrounded by people and under the influence of a society that contradicts the view you mentioned (that they think Western Women should be treated horribly) is definitely expected to follow those basic rules of a new society. I'm not going to say that most of them are, but I think it's fairly reasonable to assume that any human being from any culture will be expected to adapt to their surroundings.

Going by the fact that the expected 1 million to 1.5 million refugees being expected into Europe (Not German btw, that statement was false and overblown, those refugees coming to Germany would be spread across Europe, not just Germany), we can easily agree that not every single one of, or even the majority of those refugees are causing crimes (just as how only 1 in 7 Mexican immigrants were convicted of crimes back in 2012).

We can also agree that their culture definitely has a big part in this, but what if it isn't as simple as a person committing a crime because their previous background involved a culture that, for the most part, disrespected women's rights? If I were to go to another country, say Japan. Can't we all agree that I'm going to break a bunch of social taboos, not because I want to, but because I'm intend to adapt and am still learning?

Now let's think of a reason why I would break a bunch of social taboos in Japan not because I was ignorant, but because I just wanted to. Either:

A. I'm a horrible human being that doesn't give a shit about others.

or

B. Group mentality.

Answer A seems a bit weird to me, all humans have the capacity to be good, and I'm just going to assume (given that it's pretty reasonable) that the Arab world isn't filled with mean people like It's some isolated star trek planet.

Answer B is actually quite relatable. Would you say that most of us would go to the movies alone, do fun social activities alone, do things that we wouldn't have been able to do before without a group? Not only is the group mentality's effect on our social behavior well recorded in society, it can be involved in pretty much every horrific event you can think of.

  • The rise of the Third Reich
  • Rapes in pretty much every war
  • Witch hunting
  • Crowd Executions -etc.

Now that we (might have) established that group mentality could play a HUGE role in this, let's talk about how this comes about and how social institutions can fix it.

I arrive at a new country, I don't know anyone, I don't have a place to live, I DO have one connection. He's a friend who grew up in a town not too far away from where I grew. We can easily assume that this contact, whom I barely know, is a contact regardless. This draws us closer to them than anyone since the slightest connection is still a connection. We can also assume that this man knows others who barely know him.

It turns out that he owns a business. He can get me and others a job in this new country so I can get on my feet.

I've been working for months, I live in an apartment with him and 3 other men from my home country. I feel so disconnected from this new country yet feel so at home with these people. We have discussions every night and talk reflect our ideas like a soundproof room. Nothing from my home country gets to my head, everything my fellow countrymen tell me is what I believe in, and it's good that I believe in that.

What's just started is the beginning of a long term reversal of acculturation. You're being thrown away from the culture of your new country, and follow nothing but the culture of your old homeland.

Things like this happen everywhere, NYC, Chicago, San-Francisco, it's a basic experience most immigrants have. Things like this often lead to stereotypes like all Indian working in 7/11, Gas-Stations, and Mini-Marts, Chinese immigrants working in Laundromats, etc. But another topic rarely discussed is their ideals.

A group of immigrants coming to a new country in a controlled manner is often going to lead to hardships. At one point in American History we admitted around a million immigrants in a single year. Granted, it was easier since they had papers and weren't illegally coming into the country in massive numbers.

A wave of a million immigrants coming to Europe isn't something that could lead to disaster, however, a group of undocumented immigrants can lead to a lot of problems such as a lack of accommodation and allocation of proper resources to the issue.

Now that we can (probably) agree that undocumented immigrants coming to a country can be a problem, and that culture has little to do with the larger, direct issue (while still playing a big role indirectly), let's finish this with an organized thought process.

Immigrants involved in crime are a problem, there culture and previous upbringing can affect the crime, but that has little to do with why the crime was committed in the first place. Sexual harassment by these groups are usually done in groups, not individually. If the case were individual, then that has to do with socio-economic positioning with a troubled lifestyle that can involved things like drugs, abuse, and sexual harassment among other things. Something like this isn't widespread a common with the recent sexual assault cases with these groups.

The problem is polarization, we're simply not including these groups in a process that integrates them into society. Most people would say that culture is in the way of that integration and that's grade A bullshit. If a dog can grow up in a domestic setting and be taught its manners then a human being can do it too. The only thing getting in the way of that process is the isolation that comes with being an immigrant or group of immigrants.

We can't just say that these people are doomed by their culture to be sexually harassing by their very nature, we can, however, integrate them into society through means that are probably being discussed around Europe as we speak.

While we continue to blame it on people being inherently animals, there are people just like them that have integrated fine and aren't committing crimes. This is the equivalent of a rich, white family being concerned of their neighborhood because a black family moved in from a bad neighborhood. It's like treating former military men as if they're dangerous just because PTSD is a big issue among veterans.

People need to stop looking at this issue with such simplicity and over reaction and ask, how is this a unique case?
