Paris is the worst place ever to look for an apartment

Yeah, it's really hard to look for an apt in the center in the late summer. The competition is really stiff.

In addition, you probably need a "garrant". Essentially, a family member needs to cosign if they are French. If you graduated as a student then the state will do it for you. However, for most foreigners you just need to pay a company to sign for you.
It's kind of renter's insurance. Many who back down are probably hésitant because of that. Possibly also if you're not fluent.

However, you should really be checking out the 19th, 20th, 18th, 13th, 17th, and 14th. They are generally cheaper and slightly less désirable. They are just as convenient to get around the city. I live in the 17th and can get into chatlet in 15min .

The 1st through 11th, though, are closer to the universities and have réputations for being alive. It's the kind of area you have to work up to if you have standards. AND DO YOUR SEARCHING IN THE WINTER TO EARLY SPRING TO FIND THEM.
