A part of me likes Haida and identifies with him...

I say this is an East vs. West situation, Retsuko won't just get help on her own (she doesn't even because Easterners just view depression differently and doesn't seek help as often as Westerners do, she doesn't even open up to her mother for chrissakes). That's why she's portrayed as someone who wears a mask around coworkers and is fidgety when acting in a flawed manner. Which comes to the part where Haida and his coworkers come in, they egged him on because they know time is running out. They had no business dealing with her emotions, sure, but someone had to or they risk losing her forever.

Confession time, even I, a pseudo-Easterner (Filipino, Eastern by tradition, but progressively Western by culture due to 400 years of hands-on influence) tend to hide signs of depression from others, including family. We still tend to think emotions carry vulnerabilities that others might find unnecessary and

But yeah it is hard to just look at this as face value, I've seen and experienced both sides of the coin and dare I say it - it works.
