Participate in a Japanese TV show or not?

they basically say that foreign countries are weird and Japan is the best country to live in.

My wife likes this show, and I have mixed feelings about it. They don't usually treat gaikoku as a bizarre and terrifying place. The hosts will very often say things like, "That's so nice," or even "I wish we had that in Japan."

My issue with the show is that non-Japanese voices are not allowed - as in, literally, if your wife speaks to anyone, their voices will be overdubbed. And dubbing in Japan is awful - they will not use a voice actor who sounds like you; the voice actor will speak with a melodramatic tone, and the translation will be inaccurate. The entire point of the show is to take a look at foreign lands, yet they refuse to let the people there have an actual, literal voice.

The last episode I watched, a woman was living in Asia somewhere. She made dinner with her family. When she spoke the local language, it was her own voice. But when her children (who are, of course, Nihonjin) spoke the language, they were overdubbed with silly anime voices. Only "the wife" was subtitled when she spoke - all others were dubbed.

However, I did see an episode where a woman was in Australia - she had two daughters, and both spoke Japanese, and were not overdubbed. So this particular show allows only one person per episode to speak a foreign language - everyone else is overdubbed. If your wife speaks English to your neighbor, she will be broadcast as she is, but the neighbor will be dubbed. Your child, if he or she speaks, will be dubbed unless he or she speaks Japanese. You will be dubbed.

I know a lot of people on r/Japan find stuff like this to be oversensitive, but this just gets to me. It's inconsistent and unprofessional, and disrespectful to the subjects of the program (i.e., you).

They will also have actors reenact any stories your wife tells about your life - how you met, for example, or how you proposed will be performed by actors and inserted into the show.

Overall, I kind of like the show, but like most Japanese programs, I am uncomfortable with how disrespectful they are to the subjects of their conversation. There will be a panel of hosts commenting on everything you and your wife do back here in Japan, and, yes, they will ooh and ah over the tiniest thing, and make a big deal out of everything. It's basically a bunch of people talking about you behind your back. Again, you literally won't have a voice in this.

Personally? I would never, ever be on this show, nor would I expose my children to it. You might find me oversensitive, though. You might like it. I'd say watch a few episodes first; I'm sure you can find it somewhere.
