Passenger punched, teeth shattered after trying to defend another woman being harassed on bus - Manitoba

Violence, dominance...Its human nature. Its who we are. The good goes with the bad. You can always strive to be better of course, but you can't change what you are. And if you do, will you even be human anymore, or something else? Philosophy.

There is a game out there, eve online its called, its a sandbox with no rules. Game is all about human interactions thinly dressed in a sci-fi setting to make it sellable. Point of that game is to simulate humanity. No rules - you can harass, you can bully, you can do whatever you want. And over the years many sociologists studied that game because it is a very good approximator of how human societies evolve. And the result is humans, if given a sandbox, tend to build quasi-monopolistic empires built on extortion, violence, and greed - but also with aspects of good things. its very interesting, because no matter how many times you reset the server, after a few years of settling, the same social structures form. Hierarchy is based on power, power is attained via violence, money, and diplomacy. Point is, humans are humans. Its who we are. Laws and rules only veil our nature, mask our true selves. beneath, we are the same creatures that walked millions of years ago out of some jungle - territorial, aggressive, violent, but also good, benevolent, compassionate.

You can run the same experiment over and over again, but always violence will be with us. You cant eradicate it.

you have to just absorb abuse from people stronger than you

Always has it been thus.

Now you ask me if i am satisfied with the society as is. Honestly, yes. I have done alright for myself in it. Also look at larger picture. Look what humanity has achieved. I could argue that violence is even necessary for us as a species, because it gives us as individuals a unity of purpose that we otherwise could not achieve. maybe insects could work together as a single organism, but we cant. And the only way to unify us for a better goal is to have a leader. And how is a leader selected? based on violence. These days not direct violence, but in political studies there is a concept that states any imposition of will of one individual over another counts as violence. A party leader such as Trudeau makes a decision, you follow it or get kicked out of caucus - thats also violence, just not physical.

Getting back to the article...of course getting punched sucks. But, silver lining is a lesson - dont get into situations that you cannot handle. Next time, this woman-or man, or whatever - will know, if she/he wants to make someone do something, he better have more then words to back himself up.

There is a saying, pen is mightier then the sword - its highly debatable.
