Paula Simons: The clock is running out for the Edmonton Eskimos team name

eater of raw meat

is this meant to be a bad thing?

northern hunters eat raw meat, it is a cultural practice and not exclusive to their culture (beef tartar, caparaccio, sushi, etc.). if your people literally eat raw meat, why would you be offended by that? what one group calls another group of people isnt always consistent with what that group of peoples call themselves, see greeks/hellenes, or gremans/deutsche.

i have never once heard someone called an eskimo as a slur, not saying it doesn't happen, but im not sure it is at all a regular occurrence or that it is actually as charged as it is being portrayed by some in the media. the term seems antiquated and inaccurate than offensive, not unlike the terms oriental or saracen.

i think context is important around the team name. to my knowledge the team name isnt being used to denigrate a people in the way that the washington redskins is intentionally charged with racisim and bigotry.

with that said, i don't give a shit about the team name, if a lot of people are that offended by it, then maybe it should be changed. if it's just a few people rabble rousing, maybe not.
