Payroll Processing Company Screwed Up and Overpaid Employee - How to talk to employee about it

That’s a mistake that could have been caught very early in the year. I would suggest reviewing every single payroll and reconciling the amount deducted from your account to the total amount paid. This is not 100% the fault of the payroll company. It’s your company’s money and therefore your responsibility.

I run a small business withn only a handful of people, and I don't claim to know how to do this. I do look at my P&L and Balance Sheets each month, but I don't claim to be much of an accountant beyond that.

We do have a bookeeper who reconciles the amounts deducted from our account. The problem is, I don't give her a list of everyone's salaries and say, "Be sure these are all correct." Is that how I should be doing it?

Also, please try to avoid referring to her as a “girl”. Just as the men that work for you shouldn’t be referred to as “boy” either in this context.

I agree I need to be more cognizant of this. It's hard being politically correct. I go out to lunch with "the boys" at the office occasionally.
