Based upon the idea of the Unofficial Football World Championships, the title of "Unofficial World Champion" has been coined for League of Legends too. It names the "World Champion" according to the logic of a King-of-the-Hill-contest, where the king retains his title until another team defeats them in a major tournament and thus gets to sit on the throne and be the king themselves. For this particular ranking, Fnatic winning the Riot Season 1 Championship is assumed to have been the first 'Unofficial World Champion'. Ever since then, the title has been passed on to the next team who defeated the current 'Unofficial World Champion'. Only tournaments played live or at a LAN and broadcasted on-location are counted for this title.
