Penticton, Kelowna cancel Canada Day festivities

“Out of respect for Indigenous communities across Canada who are grieving, it is important to Penticton city council that this year’s Canada Day activities honour the history, culture and traditions of Indigenous people”

International person here. Based on whatever I have read, it seems like this dark part of Canadian history is a common knowledge. So how did finding more evidence on a known fact led to "grief" ? People go into "grief" when they find bodies of MIA relative/friends or lose someone untimely to disease and accidents. Are people really "grieving" or are just in remorse (like they already were due to this dark chapter in Canadian history).
