People are too lazy with their gold, and that is why they complain about not having anything to use it on.

Except that simply isn't true.

Most martials do not get magic attacks by default - there are plenty of monsters that do not have a representative CR if one or more characters can't harm them. They need a magic weapon.

Saving throws get out of control at higher levels. Why? Well at level 1 I have 14 dexterity and the enemy wizard has 14 intelligence so I have a decent chance to save. At level 20 the enemy wizard has 26 intelligence, I still have 14 dexterity, and I don't have proficiency in the saving throw, so my odds of beating those dex saves are shit. Now, dex saves typically just deal damage. But imagine you suck at wisdom saves instead - half of those effects just straight up remove you from play or even turn your character against the others. By the end of the campaign everyone needs to have several items that raise their saving throws. I'm not even joking, it is a requirement.

If 5e was designed to be played without magic items, it was not designed well.
