Why do people become alcoholics ?

I drank after I left the military more because it was the culture at my office. You drank with the senior partners you made more money. I decided to stop because my father and grandfather were alcoholics and I noticed I was drinking a lot more cause of Covid. I’m lucky I’m at the point where I can just stop and use an evening workout to create a new habit. That being said it just kinda creeped up on me. We have a friend group who are all taking similar quarantine measures and we all just started partying more out of boredom. Then I woke up and realized I’ve been hungover too many times over the last couple of months. So I was an alcoholic but I was heading there. I can imagine it would be harder to stop if I had some serious issues I was dealing with.
