Why do people care about car acceleration or speed? Not trolling

I've had plenty of (mostly old) cars since I've been driving, there were very weak and quite powerful ones, and honestly, for daily driving - I don't really care. For the fun driving, I think there is a certain sweet spot - there is "not enough", and there is "too much" horsepower for proper fun driving, which depends on the driving skills.

City driving

I live near a large capital city in a village, and when I have to head into the office (1-2 times a week), I gotta get to the inner city, which means it's almost 100% congestion apart from the 3-4kms I can drive normally since we have some winding roads on the way to the city, and traffic doesn't build up there (yet) even in rush hour. Apart from that section, it's 25-30 minutes of heavy traffic.

And in heavy traffic, I couldn't care less about the performance of the car I'm sitting in. In contrary - I think a relatively slow car is less frustrating in heavy traffic, you don't have to worry about how harshly it responds to pressing the gas pedal, and it consumes less petrol. Back when I had a different job in the city, and had to make the commute every working day, I was driving around a 60 horsepower '95 Ford Escort 1.3 petrol. And it was enough for that, I never really felt like I need more on that daily route. Really, I didn't, and I do like driving, I am a major petrolhead. Now I have a 136hp Kia I take when I go to the city, and it's more than enough for this use case, wouldn't say I take advantage of the extra power when I compare the experience to my very old Escort.

Fun driving / weekend car

I live in an area full of scenic mountain roads, the quality of the roads is good enough for a blast, so I do a lot of fun weekend driving around there.

I've had a go in many different cars including 500hp+ modern sports cars and older sports cars, and of course, I regularly drive my old hobby cars in these sections. Since these mountain roads are quite technical without many long straights, I've noticed when I'm in any of the modern, turbocharged (= monumental torque low down), 450-500 or more horsepower insane cars like the new M3 which I've tried recently, I just can't have as much fun as I can in 200-300-400-ish hp cars, especially naturally aspirated older ones that need the power and torque to build up. You can't switch through the gears since you'd end up on a tree with the pace you'd be doing, you can't even touch the car's limits, you feel like you're cruising, since these new ones are just so capable you can't really use them to their potentials outside of race tracks (but even there, you need the skills). I'm no racing driver or super experienced driver, but I do attend track days and did some amateur rallies way back, so I think I am above average regarding sporty driving skills. Yet I feel this way. These new super powerful monsters are just too much for the streets.

However, I think anything below 200 horsepower is going to give you the feeling that you need more. It's how I feel in all Miatas as an example - they are fun, they bring a smile to your face, but you can't help feeling you could do with more power.

German Autobahn

A few years ago I did regularly drive on the unlimited sections of the German Autobahn - and outside of race tracks, this is the only place where I truly felt I can appreciate 400+ horsepower. If you want to cruise at high speeds, you want the power to allow for it in comfort.
