It's not at all surprising from an evolutionary psychology standpoint and the parts of our "monkey brain" that drives such generalized behavior. Beauty standards and the fashion industry are a symptom, not a cause. The cause is simply fertility. Fertility of women peaks at a young age, tapers off, and then drops to zero when menopause hits. Male fertility stays fairly steady, tapers off, but never goes to zero.

That's certainly NOT an excuse for creepily counting down until some young actress turns 18. They have control over that. But attractiveness as a function of sex and age, in a very general sense, very much has an evolutionary basis as much as we don't want to admit that.
