Why do people think the Nordic countries are progressive?

The Nordic people are pretty damn racist

Many are, but far from all. What you see on the interwebz is not always an actual representation of how it's like in real life.

If anything, I see more of a resemblance to the citizens of Nazi Germany than citizens of a supposed liberal nation.

Nah, it's not all that bad. We have our fair share of racists and xenophobes, conservatists and those of strong social conformity but it's not worse than the problem you have with the Rebublicans.

Then you get to even more disturbing stuff like Norway banning feeding the homeless.

Yeah, that's f*cked up.

Many laws in the Nordic nations make it a living hell to be poor.

I'm not all that well read on Norway and Denmark, but the social help programs here are actually kind of good. You basically get enough money to pay your expenses every month in exchange for applying to 3 jobs a month and going to seminars about applying for jobs and such.

And please, don't give me that bullshit about how if you're poor in the Nordic countries, then you brought that on yourself. There are many factors which come into play on why you might be poor or homeless. Mental illness is a big one and many Nordic peoples suffer from mental illnesses, and unfortunately, the mental healthcare system there is quite poor because, as pointed out earlier, most Nordics do not like people who stand out or who are different.

No my friend. Sweden's mental healthcare is bullshit because our parents politicians felt it was a good idea to abolish mental institutions about 25-30 years ago. It's crappy as hell and should be taken care of. Mental illness if most often treated my simple medication nowadays and the public knowledge is very low.

Being poor and homeless is no joke. That life sure would be a living hell and social help measures could do alot more to help in taming this problem. But that's not to say that they are abandoned.
