People of Reddit born before September 11, 2001, what was experiencing 9/11 like?

Surreal. I was asleep, woken up from a not-very-close friend with a panicked voicemail. She said "GET IN YOUR CAR AND DRIVE OUT OF TOWN. AMERICA IS UNDER ATTACK. NEW YORK IS IN FLAMES. THEY BOMBED THE PENTAGON"

I thought, what a load of shit, it is probably an accidental crash into a building, same as happened in 1950s. Then I turned on computer, Yahoo News was 503 unavailable. Every 20-30 reloads I could get a news page, with an entirely different updated story.

There was an interview with some "expert" who said this has the classic signature of Osama Bin Laden - again, a total load of shit, I thought.

Work was cancelled. Everybody wandered the streets in a daze. We stood in line to give blood, no idea what would happen next (almost all the blood was thrown away a week later. They didn't have enough storage for all they collected)

I went to a diner, had breakfast and talked to a bum who said it was all a scam to distract people. I tried to buy his breakfast, he refused.
