Why do people want socialized medicine in the states?

It's not either/or like you seem to think. In countries with socialized healthcare you can have private insurance too, with all its benefits, if you can afford it. Those who can't would very much rather wait for treatment than not get it at all.

Before you tell me about paying for something you don't use, check out how much public money countries spend on healthcare. The US already spends about as much as other first-world countries - but on lining the pockets of middlemen and the industry instead of providing care.

You also need to be skeptical of those documentaries. The healthcare industry spends money on producing propaganda to maintain the status quo. I live in a relatively poor country with SH, and while there are long waiting lists for some less than essential procedures, and it sucks, nobody is dying because they're stuck in line for lifesaving treatment, besides unfortunate facts of life like organ transplants that are a problem everywhere.
