I think people have a very warped idea of good and bad.

... Aren't you basically agreeing with OP? The vast majority of people "stay out of people's problems" because they do not care enough about them.

Realistically, most folks only care about themselves, and the close circle of people around them. They might sympathise for strangers who are worse off. Maybe even throw a few dollars. But they will not extend a hand if it's difficult to do so, or if it makes life difficult for them. They may even silently, passively approve of "bad" actions, if it makes life easier for them.

OP's point is that those folks aren't "good" - "good" people are the ones who go out of their way to help people, even if those people are absolute strangers, and even if it's hard to do so.

Most folks are, to use your DnD analogy, "true neutral". They might not like evil actions (who wants an evil landlord?), but they will not go out of their way to do good. They keep to their own.
