People who can speak multiple languages, what is the best way to learn it?

According to our social norms it's very rude to inconvenience someone else and we generally try to accommodate each other to what might be seen as an extreme extent to some cultures.

This means we don't talk to strangers (unless there's a specific social circumstances). Even if there's double seats on the bus everyone decides to stand if it means sitting by someone else (for their sake). Nobody asks for help. DIY culture is huge and nobody hires service people unless it's an emergency.

When it come language, since we know English, we'll just switch to it since it's probably what the person we speak to knows best (but also a bit for our sake because, let's be honest, it's fucking difficult to understand Swedish spoken by people who have lived here for less than 10 years).
