People who got fired on the first day of the job, what happened?

I had been looking for a night job when I was in Grade 10 and I got a phone call back from Subway. Asked if I could start the very next day after school and work from 4pm to midnight. Oh well, it was a job and it would get my parents off my back.

I show up and get my green Subway shirt and go through all the training with this other girl. After 9pm, the girl I was working with just left. She just left and didn't come back. I barely knew what I was doing and people were still coming in and I was desperate and feeling really stupid. Couldn't do cash, didn't know anyone else in the company. Looked around for a list of names and numbers near the cash register hoping it would show someone's name. Ended up calling a few numbers before eventually talking to the franchise owner who asked me who I was. I told him I was hired and now I'm alone in his store and could he please come down.

He ended up telling me the girl who 'hired' me had no authority to hire me and just did it to get out of a shift. He was furious at her. I'm standing around and he says he's sorry but i'm not technically an employee so I had to leave and he also said he can't pay me if I'm not an employee. He let me keep the shirt.

Now that I'm older, I would have argued right back and knew exactly what to say. At the time, I just apologized TO HIM and said I understood and left after almost 8 hours of work with a free Subway shirt.

TL;DR = Hired at Subway by an employee with no authority to hire me who proceeds to leave me alone for hours until I called the owner only to find I wasn't a real employee and couldn't have any money but I got to keep the Subway t-shirt.
