People who grew up middle/upper class, what did you not believe about low income households but it was actually true?

I had a similar conversation with my cousin when we were both starting out in our careers (maybe 10 years ago). Her "problem" was that she couldn't decide if she should take her 30k christmas bonus as company shares or cash. I was doing pretty well financially but I was working 4 days a week and that was almost my yearly salary at the time. We had similar grades but she actually researched jobs that pay well. I just chose something computing related because I was always interested in computing stuff, it was an easy convenient choice.

Geophysics if you were wondering, she got somewhere in the ballpark of 200k + a bonus each year. Don't imagine it as her hating her job but making lots of money, her job isn't bad at all. She has normal hours (not like a chef/doctor/lawyer) and lots of her work is doing interesting things like going out on site or in planes to take readings and interpreting the results. If you are just leaving school and thinking about a career, it's worth taking the time to sift through your career choices instead of just picking the 'obvious' easy choice.
