People who listen to/watch something on their phone with no headphones in public spaces, why do you do this?

I think music is much more of a disturbance than conversation. Conversation becomes background noise unless they're abnormally loud. Only specific types of music can blend in (elevator music, mood music etc.), and that's not the type of music people usually play. It's always rock or rap that sounds really bad out of a small phone or bluetooth speaker and when you get more than a few feet away it sounds even worse. It doesn't even sound like music. All you get is high hats and mumbled lyrics.

Personally I think people who bring their speakers to the beach or a park are the worst offenders (OK actual worst offenders are people who play music while hiking. Just why?). Even expensive portable speakers sound really bad and they're interrupting what would otherwise be a peaceful environment. If it's tourist season and crazy busy it's unavoidable and I've learned to accept it (even if I still don't like it). And if there's a party or whatever you gotta have music. But most of the time when it's just a few people on the beach and someone's got crappy music blaring it's obnoxious. Get some ear buds bud.

With respect, I can flip the nouns in your tirade here and keep the derisive condescension and the meaning is entirely flipped. Your dispute about the genre is similar to if I disputed the content of the conversations. Your dispute about quality is similar to if I disputed the quality of the conversation. Your dispute about the high pitched sound of bad speakers I could carry on to someone whose voice is shrill and irritating.

Our only substantial point of difference here is that you seem to think parks and beaches should be a maintained "peaceful environment". I say public spaces are for public use. I say making music is public use, whether it is background music, rap, or a busker with a ukelele. If you want to be undisturbed in a public space, why don't you shove in the ear buds, bud? You can't expect the world around you to just shut up because you want to walk through public spaces as of they're libraries.
