People who lost their jobs by going off on a customer, what is your story?

I worked at a grocery store and the manager said that we couldn't cash checks that had over 25.00 in change. The first customer I get is an 85 year old lady who coincidentally I grew up with and was best friends it's my grandma. She was buying groceries and items for her house and wrote the check. She wanted 75.00 dollars back so I explained that all I needed was a managers approval and I could do it. She proceeded to cuss, and then started to insult me about how I was calling her cheap and trash. I didn't say anything until her granddaughter and son came over and started to join in on her yelling at me. I finally lost my cool and shut down my till then walked away when the manager didn't come and the old lady was slamming her bags down in her cart. I told them they could get her things paid for at the courtesy counter and walked away(in tears). The manager finally arrived and signed off on the check. He didn't say anything to me but later wrote me up for walking away from my till, when I explained why he said the customer was always right. I quit a week later when the same thing happened with a woman and her daughter over the same issue but this time they were cussing and throwing things at me in Armenian?.
