People who no longer speak to their best friends who they thought would be in their lives forever, why did you stop talking/being best friends?

We were friends since early high school throughout our early 30’s. He started getting more distant and snobby about things. I noticed our friends were also getting more distant from me. I wasn’t sure what was wrong but I let it be. He moved away and I moved in with my fiancé. He kept getting more and more critical of all the things I said online and posted about. A lot of his newer friends would bandwagon with him criticizing me. I made a joke that was admittedly in poor taste and he blew up on me. He revealed that he and other people had been tracking all my online activity and forming a digital portfolio of my actions. He said that he had been in contact with our friends and that I was not welcome with them anymore. This was actually hilarious because I still hung out with most of them. Turns out they had been making fun of him because he had been up his own ass about things lately and I found out he had been stealing from a few of them for years. I guess in the last few years he had taken a hard turn towards radical leftist ideology and been cutting people out of his life who did not bow to his belief system. I am, along with all of my friends- very liberal progressives, but I guess we weren’t left enough. Even funnier is that he gave money to the Trump campaign for a maga hat and buttons because he wanted souvenirs of the election. He unintentionally helped his ideological opponents win. I do not wish to hear from him again.
