People who scream and yell at minimum wage workers, what the hell is your problem?

Frustration, helplessness, genuinely having a bad day or having just received terrible news. Sometimes they might just be cunts who always act that way. You never can tell because these customers are in your lives for maybe 2-3 minutes and then you might never meet them again, but they'll be living with whatever it is they're living with for much longer. So I can find it easy to let go if I'm on the receiving end. I have had customers come back to me and apologise if they were rude to me previously, so I'd assume most of the time it's gonna be the first two things I mentioned - frustration and a feeling of helplessness.

I'm not in retail, but I still work customer service in a call centre. Frustrated/helpless customers are the ones I can genuinely feel for. Corporations can be very soulless machines, with no care for the individual plight of a single consumer. Thankfully I'm in a position to help those people to a point, but it really depends on the issue they're having. For some issues, there's no help no matter how high up the chain you go.

As a rep, I also experience these feelings of frustration as I'm bound by company policy a lot of the time and I am literally powerless to help. Worse, I am often forced to defend policies I do not personally support. It's definitely helped me hone my skills in debating people on things I don't believe in, but it's a bit shit if I want any kind of job satisfaction.

That brings me to my last thought... working customer service in itself isn't always bad. It really depends on what kind of company you work for. Companies that empower you to help customers in any way possible are no doubt the best. Companies that say "fuck it, give them a full refund or replacement, it's not worth the headache otherwise" are also decent purely because it minimises hassle for the customer and the reps alike. They'll cut their losses to maintain a good reputation for customer satisfaction and ultimately that'll work in their favour and it'll also mean happier reps. My employer is slowly learning the benefits of this, but it's taking them a few years longer than I'd like. Stubborn. Stubborn all the way down.
