People who have spent over $20 000 on their wedding day, why?

My wedding was over 20k but I personally spent under 10k. My wife and I really wanted to go as cheap as possible because I don't see the point in spending all of our money but every time we told our parents we weren't going to do something because of cost, one of them would insist on paying for that thing for us.

I know that sounds like a weird thing to be upset about but it kind of was upsetting, our families aren't wealthy and we didn't want them spending a bunch of money either but they were REALLY insistent about everything. I still get annoyed when I think about the dress; my wife wanted to rent a dress because it's so much cheaper than buying one that will just sit in the closet for the rest of our lives but her mom got pretty mean about it and made us let her pay for a dress.

I think it ultimately came down to our parents feeling a little insulted, like our decision to go cheap on the wedding was some sort of judgement against them and the weddings traditions they and the rest of the family had. It was bad enough getting them on board with our wedding not taking place in a church (I was the first in my whole family history to do this) so we decided to not fight them on the other stuff.
