Do people with cancer actually appreciate when their friends/family shave their heads in solidarity or does it come across as pointless?

I’m not the person you asked, but I’m also a ginger who faced lots of bullying for most of their life, so maybe my perspective could still be of some help.

When I was growing up, being ginger was not just having red hair, but also having “gross” pale skin, “too many” freckles, eyebrows and eyelashes so light they look invisible at times, skin that turns red easily, being too bright in the sun, etc. All of these features were things I was taught to feel disgusted by (and I still have self-esteem issues to this day). The “beautiful” gingers I saw on TV usually only had red hair, sometimes a few freckles on their face if any, and their eyebrows and lashes were usually brown. Their skin was typically sun-kissed. If they were pale, their color was usually even. Gingers like me, for example Ron Weasley from Harry Potter and Anne Shirley from Anne With An E? They were the ones nobody wanted to look like.

I’d feel weirded out if someone thought just dying their hair was enough to make me feel like I wasn’t alone. I wouldn’t necessarily be offended, I’d probably just cringe internally but pretend to be happy to avoid hurting their feelings.
