People hallucinate, confabulate, and flat out lie. And then religion is a state of mind where people blur the line between their fantasies and reality to the point where pretending to believe and really believing become indistinguishable. And that's when they're not nearly dead, so add in whatever brain glitches the trauma brings.

Anyway I don't really get your question. It's one of these "I don't understand" questions where I can't tell if you're literally saying you don't understand, like I might say "I don't understand what the rules to cricket are" or it's a rhetorical device where you're just saying "I think these people are acting wacky".
